Masterspec 2010 Highlights 16 Nov 2009

NZIA SCC 2009
With the NZIA release of the 2009 Standard Conditions of Contract the Masterspec general sections 1231NA NZIA SCC CONTRACT and 1231NB NZIA SCC SF CONTRACT have been updated accordingly.

PLASTERBOARD SPLIT
Because some of the Plasterboard section were getting very large and complex to edit, we have split them into standard plasterboard and special performance board sections. This allows a degree of simple pre-editing, if you don’t need the performance boards you don’t select them. The old generic section 5113 has been split into a new standard board section 5113 PLASTERBOARD LINING and in Masterspec Standard 5171 PLASTERBOARD SOUND AND FIRE LININGS. The Branded sections have been similarly split but go further depending and the range of product, including 5173 Plasterboard radiation protection, 5174 Impact plasterboard and 5311 Plasterboard ceiling tiles.

LIQUID SUPPLY AND DISPOSAL
Within the Masterspec/CBI system there has been some confusion over the various elements of liquids supplied to a building and liquids leaving a building. We have rationalised the CBI structure in this area, renaming the old 71 Liquid to 71 Liquid Supply and also renaming the old 74 Drainage to 74 Liquid Disposal. 74 has been reorganised to allow work sections from other areas to be moved into it. As a result some of the Masterspec generic and branded sections have been moved around;

4391 Rainwater spouting and downpipes now 7411 Rainwater spouting systems
4392 Rainwater plumbing: now 7412 Rainwater systems
7140 Sanitary plumbing (Basic): now 7420 Sanitary systems (Basic)
7141 Sanitary plumbing: now 7421 Sanitary systems
7410 Drainage (Basic): now 7430 Drainage (Basic)
7400 Drainage General: now 7431 Drainage General
7411 Groundwater drainage: now 7441 Groundwater drainage
7421 Surface water drainage: now 7451 Surface water drainage
7431 Foul water drainage: now 7461 Foul water drainage
7432 Wastewater treatment system: now 7462 Wastewater treatment system

ELECTRICAL SECTIONS STANDARD AND ENGINEERING
You may be aware that for part of this year we have had a wide range of electrical sections in Masterspec Standard, two combined sections for Architectural specifiers 7701 ELECTRICAL BASIC and 7702 ELECTRICAL STANDARD, and a series of electrical sections for Engineers based around 7705 ELECTRICAL GENERAL. As the demand from the Engineers has been to increase the technical content of the Engineer sections, so these sections have become too complex for non-engineers. So with the two sections 7701 and 7702 now available to Architectural writers, we are removing from Standard the sections based around 7705 ELECTRICAL GENERAL, which will now only be available in Masterspec Engineering.
Also 7705 will have a number change to 7707 ELECTRICAL GENERAL.

NZS 4218 AND NZS 3404
A number of New Zealand Standards changed this year, important new ones to note are NZS 4218: 2009 Thermal Insulation – Housing and Small Buildings, and NZS 3404.1: 2009 Steel Structures Standard – Materials, Fabrication and Construction. As neither of these Standards are recognised by the NZBC yet, Masterspec will continue to refer to the previous versions (which remain current) as part of an acceptable solution. However you can still use the new versions as an alternative solution, but remember to remove the old date in the Documents Referred To clause.
Both these Standards, old and new versions, are available to view through the Masterspec Standards Online Library service.

STEELWORK CORROSION
There has been some confusion between the old masterspec section 6745 PROTECTIVE COATINGS – STEELWORK and 6781 STEELWORK CORROSION PROTECTION, and there was also a lack of coverage of certain systems. The new sections which give wider coverage and clarity are;
6745 PROTECTIVE COATINGS – STEELWORK which now only refers to paint or coatings applied by brush, roller or conventional sprays.
6781 HOT DIP GALVANIZING only deals with Hot dip galvanizing.
6782 METAL SPRAY CORROSION PROTECTION deals with Metallizing also known as Thermal Spraying, which is the sprayed application of molten zinc and aluminium/zinc.

PHOTOVOLTAIC SYSTEMS
The new addition to our growing list of sustainable sections is 7717 PHOTOVOLTAIC POWER SYSTEMS, for on grid and off grid applications. Available in Standard and Engineering.

HOUSE LIFTING AND PARTIAL DEMOLITION
2133 TEMPORARY SUPPORT TO EXISTING STRUCTURES is a new section dealing with the lifting of house type structures to allow for alterations, like the garage underneath. You may like to combine this with the other new section 2112 PARTIAL DEMOLITION which as its name implies is for demolition of parts of the building, and is particularly suitable for those interior fit out projects.

GAS SUPPLY AND GAS CYLINDERS
Up until now Masterspec has only had the section 7211 on Natural Gas supply, which had a small reference to LPG cylinders. With the growth of LPG piped supply in some centres and the increase in LPG cylinder installations we felt it was time to expand the coverage. So we now have a revised old section and a new section;
7211 GAS SYSTEM UTILITY NETWORKS which includes natural gas or LPG from a major pipe supply network.
7212 GAS SYSTEM LPG CYLINDERS which deals with the typical dual 45kg LPG cylinder installations.

CEILING SYSTEMS
The old 5311 SUSPENDED CEILINGS in Standard covered both suspended metal grid flush/sheet finished ceilings and suspended grid drop in tile ceilings. This could be very confusing, particularly if both systems were used on a project and it was not obvious if all you wanted was a flush plasterboard ceiling on a metal grid. They have now been split up to;
5311 SUSPENDED TILE CEILINGS covering the suspended grid with drop in tiles
5313 SUSPENDED SHEET CEILINGS covering the suspended metal grid/top hat system with sheets/panels fixed underneath, flush finished or expressed joints.
The Forman section have been similarly split into 5311F and 5313F, plus 5172F.

APL WINDOWS
APL have combined most of their window sections into 4521AP ALUMINIUM WINDOWS AND DOORS. This replaces those sections covering Vantage, First, Architectural Series, Metro, and Smartwood.

ELECTRIC FLOOR HEATING
New section 7553 UNDERFLOOR HEATING MATS SYSTEM covers thermostatically controlled electrical underfloor heating usually consisting of pre-wired mats for installation under tiles or other flooring.

AUTOMATIC FIRE SPRINKLER SYSTEMS
With a few minor changes the old 7312 FIRE SPRINKLER SYSTEMS has been changed to the new 7312 AUTOMATIC FIRE SPRINKLER SYSTEMS, which has extended the range of buildings covered.
