HEAT PUMP WATER HEATERS NOW AN OPTION
Heat pump water heaters have been added as an option to Masterspec Hot & Cold water sections, in response to user requests.
Heat pump water heater as the name suggests use a heat pump to heat the water in a cylinder, they generally consist of two types:
- Integral system - the heat pump and the storage cylinder are directly connect together and located outside. (included in Masterspec)
- Split system - the heat pump and storage cylinder are separate, which means the cylinder can be inside if necessary and the heat pump outside. (included in Masterspec)
The split system can also be broken down into two further types:
- Cylinder separate from the heat pump (combined evaporator/condenser), with a water flow and return between the two. (included in Masterspec)
- Combined cylinder/condenser and separate outdoor evaporator with refrigerant flow and return between the two. (will need modification in Masterspec)
To offset loss of efficiency at very low temperatures some systems include an electric booster element in the cylinder.
With the split system it may be possible to upgrade by reusing an existing hot water cylinder.
Coincidently, for more background, BRANZ have just released a new BRANZ Bulletin 590 (replaces 529) Heat Pump Water Heating.
